Atlantis, also known as Sa Pedrera de Cala d’Hort, is one of the most mysterious and fascinating places on Ibiza. This hidden gem near Es Vedrà is surrounded by legends and mystery, making it a magical destination for adventurous travelers.
The name Atlantis refers to the legendary sunken city, but the real origin is less fairy-tale-like. In reality, it is an ancient quarry where stone blocks were cut to build the city walls of Dalt Vila. This left large, square indentations in the rocks, which, when filled with water, resemble natural swimming pools. This unique setting, combined with the stunning view of Es Vedrà, makes Atlantis almost a magical place.
The mystery surrounding this place adds to its allure. Locals often keep tight-lipped about the exact location, and the route is not marked anywhere. But fear not – below you’ll find the directions and tips for a safe trek.
The trek to Atlantis is challenging and takes about 30 minutes down, plus a steep climb back up that often takes longer. The path is steep and scattered with loose stones, so sturdy hiking boots with good grip are absolutely necessary.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks. A backpack is most convenient so you can keep your hands free during the descent. Avoid the hottest time of the day and start early for a safe and pleasant hike.
Once down, you’ll discover the famous square indentations in the rocks, filled with water. Here you can relax, swim, and enjoy the peace.
To the left of the indentations, you’ll find a large peace sign made of stones. To the right is an opening in the rocks with some wall drawings and sculptures – a fascinating detail that enhances the mystical atmosphere of Atlantis.
Another remarkable feature in this area is the mysterious stone circles. According to a local artist who worked on the circles in 2016, spiral-shaped wind currents regularly form here. He built the circles to redirect this negative energy into positive energy. It’s common to leave a stone on one of the little towers for good luck – a lovely Ibiza tradition you definitely don’t want to miss.
In 2025, the parking lot at Atlantis was closed, and large boulders and guardrails were placed to prevent cars and hikers from accessing the area. The local government has enforced strict measures, and parking violations in the area can result in fines of up to 3000 euros.
Still want to visit Atlantis? Walk past the wooden fence (there’s an opening for hikers) and follow the path for about 10 minutes. You’ll reach a clearing with a stone and metal post. Turn left here and walk another 200 meters until you reach the stone circles. The entrance to Atlantis is to the left of the tree; here begins the steep descent down the cliff.
