Sa Talaia: The Highest Point of Ibiza

Sa Talaia, located in the municipality of Sant Josep, is the highest mountain on Ibiza at 475 meters. This impressive mountain offers spectacular views over the island and is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. The name 'Talaia' means 'watchtower' in Catalan, and that's no coincidence. From the top of Sa Talaia, you can enjoy a panoramic view that lets you experience Ibiza in a unique way.

Breathtaking View from Sa Talaia

Once at the top, you are treated to an unrivaled panorama. On clear days, you can see almost the entire island. This is the moment when you realize how compact Ibiza actually is. On very clear days, the view even extends to the coast of the neighboring island of Formentera and the Spanish mainland! This makes Sa Talaia an ideal spot for photographers and nature lovers. Be sure to bring your camera to capture these impressive vistas.

At the top stands a large antenna. If you stand next to this antenna and look north, you'll see the Bay of San Antonio, the city skyline, Cap Nonó mountain, and the tourist areas of Cala de Bou and Port des Torrent. Looking south, you'll spot the picturesque bay of Porroig, Cala Jondal, Las Salinas, and Playa d’en Bossa. With the coastline of Formentera in the background, this view is truly extraordinary!

Hiking Tip: Extra Viewpoint

Want to discover even more? Return to the main road and leave the antenna behind. Follow the narrow path that goes uphill to the right to a small hill. Here you’ll enjoy a fantastic view of the west coast of Sant Josep. From here, you can see Cala Bassa beach, the beautiful Cala Comte, and the natural reserve “Illots de Ponent.” The best time to admire this view? Definitely during sunset – the colors are breathtaking!

Memorial for the Plane Crash

Sa Talaia also has a tragic history. On January 7, 1972, Iberia Flight 602 crashed on the mountain's summit. Due to poor weather conditions and dense fog, the pilot misread the altimeter, with fatal consequences. The plane broke in two, and all 104 passengers and crew members perished. In memory of this tragedy, a memorial was erected on the mountain. This impressive monument is certainly worth a visit and offers a moment of reflection.
