What makes the Stairway to Heaven special

The Stairway to Heaven is a long, straight outdoor staircase in a residential area of Ibiza Town (Eivissa), close to Can Misses hospital. Photograph it from below at the right angle and the steps seem to climb endlessly into the sky. That effect is what brings photographers and Instagrammers here.

There are well over a hundred steps, so the climb takes a fair bit of effort. From the top you look out over Ibiza Town, the harbour, Talamanca and Figueretes. On a clear day you can also see s’Espalmador and Formentera in the distance.

At the end of 2024, the neighbourhood around the steps was still partly unfinished. That empty, half-built setting gave photos a distinctive feel, but it may have changed since.

Getting there and parking

• Satnav: enter Carrer d’Arabí in Ibiza Town. That brings you to the bottom of the steps.
• Parking: Carrer d’Arabí is a dead end with a few parking spaces.
• Shorter option: park on Carrer de Fruitera and start halfway up the steps.
• At the top: the steps come out on Carrer de sa Noguera. At the end of 2024 that street was blocked off with concrete blocks, so don’t count on getting there by car.

Tips for your visit

• Pick a clear day for the furthest views.
• Go in the morning or late in the afternoon. The light is softer then, and it’s cooler for the climb.
• Wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
• For the ‘endless staircase’ effect, shoot low from the bottom, with the top steps against the sky.
