ibizamap.nl helps you discover Ibiza and Formentera. This page explains how we choose places, how we check facts, how we use AI and what you can do if you spot a mistake.
Who is responsible?
(to be added shortly) is editor-in-chief of ibizamap.nl and has final editorial responsibility for everything published on the site, including texts created with the help of AI.
How we choose places
- Editorial choice. Not every business or beach gets a page. We pick places we think are worth a visit or useful to know about.
- Sources. We use open data with a clear licence, such as Overture Maps, Foursquare Open Source Places, Wikidata, the European Environment Agency and the Spanish ministry MITECO, plus official registers. We add tips from our editors and information that businesses send us themselves.
- What we don't do. We don't copy ratings, texts or photos from Google, Tripadvisor, Yelp, Instagram or similar platforms. We don't use Google to find new places.
- Money plays no part. Whether a place is included never depends on payment.
How we check facts
Every place has a verification level, shown on the place's page.
- Level: Basic data · What it means: Data from open sources that we haven't checked separately yet.
- Level: Checked · What it means: Two independent sources agree, or the details have been confirmed through the business's website or menu, by phone or email, or by the business itself.
- Level: Visited · What it means: Someone from our team went there on a recorded date.
We keep data up to date: we compare it with open sources every month, check every week whether business websites still work, and run a verification round before each season. If a place hasn't been rechecked for 18 months, any labels and scores based on that check lapse.
No made-up experiences
We never write as if we've been somewhere when we haven't. A text in the first person, or about personal experiences, only appears if someone from our team really visited the place, and then under that person's name. We only use words like "the most beautiful" or "the best" when they are based on such a visit.
Safety and nature
Hidden spots are sometimes near cliffs, in caves, on private land or in protected nature, such as seagrass meadows (Posidonia) and Natura 2000 sites. That is why every secret spot shows a standard safety notice with general precautions. We only show safety information about a specific place once a person has read it; until then, only the general notice appears with the place. We do not check conditions on site ourselves: always pay attention to signs, local rules, the weather and the sea, and only go if it is safe for you.
How we use AI
We're open about it: we use AI language models (currently Claude by Anthropic) to draft and translate texts. This is how:
- Only from checked facts. The language model only receives facts we have recorded first, and it works without internet access. Every sentence has to point back to those facts.
- Automatic checks. Texts are blocked if they contain claims without a source, first-person writing without a real visit, superlatives not based on a visit, or safety claims without an official source.
- Facts in fixed sentences. Price level, season and features are filled into fixed sentences for each language, so AI doesn't translate them.
- People check. People review the texts: first every one of the first 50 texts per island and per language, then samples. At the start of the new site this is still under way: as long as a text has not been reviewed, it says that it was drafted with AI assistance and has not yet been reviewed. Safety information about a specific place only appears after a person has read it. Translations are reviewed by native speakers.
- Being honest about what this means. Not every text is read by a person before it is published. That's why we welcome corrections (see below).
- No AI images of real places. Photos of real beaches, restaurants and spots are never made with AI. If we ever use an AI illustration, we say so.
Independent from advertisers
We earn money from ads and partner links. They are always clearly marked; see advertising and affiliate links.
- Advertisers don't pay for inclusion, for the text, for the "Editor's pick" label, for ratings or for a position in the order.
- The editorial details of a place that advertises can only be changed with the approval of the editor-in-chief.
- The normal order on the site doesn't use any advertising data. Read how we sort on how we rank.
- If we visit a place at the invitation or expense of a business, we say so with the text.
Mistakes and corrections
Spotted a mistake, such as a business that has closed, wrong opening hours or an unsafe situation? Let us know at (to be added shortly) or with the button to report a change on the place's page.
- We check your report against sources and update the page if you're right.
- Reports about safety get priority.
- Every page shows when it was last updated. For a correction of substance, we note at the bottom of the page what we changed and when.
- Businesses can claim their listing and send us facts. We check those too before publishing. A business can't get a positive text or a higher position this way.
