What makes the holy stone special

The holy stone is a large sandstone rock carved with patterns and shapes. It sits on the rocky shore at the southern end of Platja de ses Salines, in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia. Around it are small rocky beaches and traditional boathouses.

A story does the rounds about where it came from. Thor Fogelberg and a friend are said to have started carving the rock years ago, working on it week after week. There’s no independent source for that story.

For photos, you can frame the carved rock against the sea or with the Torre de ses Portes in the background. This old watchtower stands further along the coast, between the beaches of Ses Salines and Es Cavallet.

Getting there and parking

• Starting point: the Sa Trinxa beach bar, at the southern end of Platja de ses Salines.
• Route: from the beach bar, walk along the coast towards the Torre de ses Portes.
• Distance: about 150 m south-east of Sa Trinxa. The stone sits among the small rocky beaches and boathouses; the map shows the exact spot.
• Parking: there’s a car park behind the beach. You can also get to Ses Salines by bus or by bike.

Tips for your visit

• Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is softer for photos.
• Bring water, sun protection and shoes with good grip.
• If you’d like to linger among the rocks, pack a towel and something to eat.
• Don’t leave any rubbish behind, not even food scraps.
