Secret spot · Sant Josep de sa Talaia
An old quarry on the rocky coast near Port des Torrent, with rectangular cuttings that fill with seawater. About five minutes’ walk from the street.
Punta de sa Pedrera juts out into the sea on the south side of the bay of Sant Antoni. To the east is the small beach of Port des Torrent, to the west Dalt es Penyal. The area belongs to Sant Agustí des Vedrà, in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia.
The headland is about 450 m long and 300 m wide. Its coastline is jagged and no more than 9 m high, with juniper bushes and pines growing on the rocky ground. The spot is also known as ‘Little Atlantis’, after the larger old quarry of Sa Pedrera near Cala d’Hort.
At the northern tip is an abandoned quarry where marès was cut. This calcareous sandstone was widely used as a building stone on Ibiza. The rectangular cuttings in the rock are clearly man-made. Some of them fill with seawater, forming shallow pools.
It’s often said that the stone from here went into the city walls of Dalt Vila. Marès was indeed used in those walls, including at the corners of the bastions. But we haven’t found any reliable source saying it came from this quarry.
When the sun is high around midday, the water in the pools turns a striking turquoise.
Drive to Carrer Torrent in Port des Torrent and follow it to the end; it’s a dead end. You can park at the end. From there, the headland is about a five-minute walk away, towards the sea.
As the walk is short, you don’t need to be an experienced hiker. Don’t leave valuables on view in the car; the spot is a little out of the way.
There are no facilities on the rocks. Bring your own water, food and sun protection.
