Sagrat Cor de Jesús

A white statue of Christ from 1947 on a tall column, about 23 metres high in total, on a hill above Ibiza Town.

What makes the Sagrat Cor de Jesús special

On a hill north of Ibiza Town, a white statue of Christ stands on a tall column: the Sagrat Cor de Jesús, or Sacred Heart of Jesus. You can see it from the main road to Sant Antoni, but the way up isn’t easy to find on your own. The monument stands in the Monte Cristo neighbourhood, in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu, halfway between Ibiza Town and Sant Rafel.

The whole monument is about 23 metres high. The statue itself measures 4.60 metres and stands on a tall column of concrete and stone. In the base there’s a small place of prayer where visitors leave flowers and candles. So as well as being a viewpoint, it’s a place for prayer and quiet.

History

The monument was built on the initiative of Antoni Cardona Riera. He led the diocese of Ibiza from 1935 as apostolic administrator and became its bishop in 1950. During the Spanish Civil War, in 1936, he is said to have hidden for several days on this hill, the Puig de na Ribes. The monument was partly meant as a thank-you to the local people who sheltered him.

The statue was made by the Valencian sculptor Antoni Sanjuan and paid for with donations from the faithful. It was inaugurated on 12 October 1947. The tower of an old windmill used to stand on the hilltop. Every year the diocese holds a celebration here around the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which usually falls in June.

The view

From the foot of the monument you look out over Ibiza Town, the harbour and the surrounding plain. The statue is lit up in the evening, so you can see it from a long way off after dark too.

Getting there and parking

  • From Ibiza Town, take the main EI-600 road towards Sant Antoni.
  • After the Hiper Centro supermarket, turn right at the next roundabout, towards the industrial estate.
  • Follow the road uphill along Carrer des Cor de Jesús.
  • At the ‘Can Farraret’ sign, keep right and immediately turn right up Carrer de Nisprer.
  • Park under the trees by the monument.

Facilities

There’s room to park by the monument. As far as we know, there are no toilets, cafés or bars.

Tips for your visit

  • Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon: it’s cooler then, and the light is softer for photos.
  • Keep your voice down; for many visitors this is a place of prayer.
  • Take your rubbish away with you.
  • The monument is close to the road to Sant Antoni, so it’s easy to combine with a drive west or north.
