What makes the Cala Blanca tunnel special

Between Siesta and Cala Llonga, on the east coast of Ibiza, lies Cala Blanca. This small cove belongs to the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu. It sits between Punta Roja and Punta de sa Cova Blanca and faces east. The little beach is made up of pebbles and surrounded by steep slopes covered in vegetation.

What sets it apart is the way in. A tunnel about 100 metres long, cut into the rock, takes you down to the beach. According to local stories, it was dug for a hotel or building project that was never finished. There’s no official source for this.

The tunnel

The tunnel is dark and the floor is strewn with loose stones. Bring a torch or use your phone’s light, and take it slowly. You go through at your own risk.

Around the entrance

To the left of the tunnel entrance, a stone arrow points to a clearing with stone sculptures and drawings on the rocks. From there you have a view along the coast.

Getting there and parking

Set your satnav to Carrer ses Dàlies in the Siesta area. Drive to the end of this unsurfaced road, where there’s a villa. Park on the last bend without blocking the way through.

Blue arrows on the rocks point the way to a narrow path that leads down to the tunnel. A stone turtle marks the entrance. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to get down, and longer for the climb back up.

Facilities

There are no facilities: no bar or café, no toilets and no sunbeds. Bring everything you need and take it all back with you.

Tips for your visit

• Bring a torch, sturdy shoes and plenty of water.
• It’s best not to go alone; this is a remote spot.
• The arrows and the turtle aren’t official waymarks and may disappear. Check the route on the map before you set off.
• A mat or a thick towel makes the pebbles more comfortable to lie on.
