What makes Cala Escondida special

A few hundred metres south of the main beaches of Platges de Comte lies Cala Escondida, a small cove on a rocky stretch of coast. The name is Spanish for ‘hidden cove’. The little beach is in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, on the west coast of Ibiza.

There isn’t much room on the sand. The water is clear and the coast around it is mostly rock. Cala Escondida is known as a naturist spot, so expect some visitors to be sunbathing nude, and respect everyone’s privacy.

According to Sant Josep town council, the coastal area around Platges de Comte lies within the protected surroundings of the nature reserve of Es Vedrà, Es Vedranell and the Illots de Ponent. The council asks visitors to stay on the marked paths there.

Getting there and parking

You reach Cala Escondida on foot from Platges de Comte. It’s a short walk, but over rocky, uneven paths. Wear sturdy shoes or sandals with a good grip.

Park at Platges de Comte. It gets busy there in summer, so arrive early. Without a car, take the summer bus or the boat from Sant Antoni to Platges de Comte.

Facilities

Cala Escondida has few facilities. There’s a small beach bar serving drinks and simple food. There are no sunloungers, parasols or showers, and there’s no lifeguard.

For toilets, restaurants and lifeguards in high season, you’ll need to go to Platges de Comte.

Tips for your visit

• Bring plenty of water, sun cream and a parasol, as there’s little shade.
• When the sea is calm, the rocky shoreline is good for snorkelling.
• Don’t photograph other people without their permission, especially at a spot where naturists sunbathe.
• Take all your rubbish away with you.
• If you’d rather have a beach with more space and facilities, go for the coves of Platges de Comte.

Safety and nature

There’s no lifeguard at Cala Escondida, so don’t swim far out, and keep away from the rocks when there are waves. The path crosses uneven rocks; don’t walk it in flip-flops or after dark. Stay on the existing paths, because the vegetation on this coast is fragile.
