What makes Sa Figuera Borda special

Sa Figuera Borda is a small cove just west of the Cala Comte beaches (Platges de Comte). It lies in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia. Here a large cave runs right through the rock, opening up a ‘window’ in the cliff that looks out to the islet of s’Espartar.

The nickname Rave Cave is said to refer to parties held here in the past, but there are no reliable sources for this. On a clear day you can see the islet of Es Vedrà to the south. Depending on the season, you can also watch the sun go down from here.

In the cove there are a few boathouses where fishermen keep their boats. A little further along stands another hut on its own, next to a small pebble beach tucked behind a rocky point. According to the municipality, the seabed is partly rock and partly sand, which makes the cove suitable for snorkelling.

Getting there and parking

Sant Josep council describes the following route. From Sant Josep, drive towards Sant Antoni and turn left just after Sant Agustí, at the signposted junction for Platges de Comte. Just before the large Platges de Comte car park, an unsurfaced track leads off to the left between the juniper bushes. Follow it to a large clearing above a high sea cliff. Walk south along the cliff to reach the stone steps that lead down the rock face to the cave in the cove.

Park in the Platges de Comte car park and walk the last stretch; it’s only a short walk. Don’t drive any further along the dirt tracks nearby: they run past private villas. Never block driveways or access routes there.

Tips for your visit

• There are no facilities at the cove. Bring water and something to eat.
• Wear sturdy shoes for the steps and the uneven, rocky ground.
• Staying for sunset? Bring a torch for the walk back in the dark.
• Leave the boathouses alone; fishermen use them.
• Take all your rubbish away with you.
